A major road in Newquay is closed from today for more than three months for gas network upgrade work.
Wales and West Utilities has begun a project on Treloggan Road, with a rolling closure from Mellanvrane Lane to Polwhele Road expected to last until the end of February.
The Treloggan Bus Association has criticised what it calls a lack of communication from the utility company, saying the closure means buses can’t serve the area, cutting services from four an hour to just one every two hours.
Posting on the association’s Facebook group, Thomas Beeson said: “Communication on all sides from the bus company, gas company and council has been extremely dire. Diversion plans keep changing, drivers don’t know what route they are taking, and us residents only found out that we are being cut off for winter about a month or so ago! How disgraceful. And they expect us to suck it up? We will campaign for a better service throughout these works and we will strive to keep residents informed.”
Programme Controller Natalie Raphael from Wales and West Utilities said: “The project is vital to ensuring gas continues to flow safely and reliably to homes and businesses across the area. We’ve worked closely with Cornwall Council, and it has been agreed that to keep people safe while we work, a rolling road closure will be in place until the end of February next year. We are sorry for any inconvenience our work may cause. We know working on busy roads like this is not ideal, and we will keep the local community updated as this essential work continues.”
First Bus Cornwall’s 87 route is being diverted, with temporary stops on Trevemper Road and at the former Kings Head.
The 59 service, which runs every two hours, will continue to operate.
