Storm Bram has now officially been named by Met Éireann, and he’s heading our way with a proper winter punch, writes forecaster Dave Clark from Kernow Weather Team.
This lively little system is gearing up to bring strong winds and heavy rain to Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly as we head into tonight and Tuesday.
RAIN ARRIVES THIS EVENING
From later this evening, bands of rain will sweep in from the southwest, turning things wet, messy, and downright soggy for many of us. Expect the rain to become persistent overnight, before gradually easing and clearing around Tuesday lunchtime. So if you're planning anything outdoors tomorrow morning...
Rainfall accumulations of 20–40 mm are likely in quite a few places, with 60–80 mm over the hills.
THE WIND WILL BE THE MAIN TROUBLE
Storm Bram isn’t just bringing rain — he’s bringing a proper blow with him. Winds will strengthen through tonight, starting southerly before shifting to a southwesterly direction during the early hours of Tuesday.
Here’s what we’re expecting:
40–50 mph gusts widely across Cornwall, 60–70+ mph gusts likely along the most exposed coasts and higher ground, gales to severe gales possible in certain locations.
WHO’S GETTING IT WORST?
While Bram will bring a blustery night to Cornwall, the most severe impacts are expected in northwest Scotland, where the Met Office has issued Amber Weather Warnings for powerful winds. We get the edges; they’re taking the full brunt.
WHAT TO EXPECT LOCALLY
-
Some tricky driving conditions overnight and Tuesday morning
-
Possible delays on ferries and flights
-
Large waves along exposed coasts
-
Local surface water on roads after downpours
-
A lively, noisy night for windows, roofs, and anyone trying to sleep
More updates coming soon as Storm Bram edges closer. Stay tuned, stay safe, and keep the kettle full — weather like this is best watched with a cuppa in hand.
