A quirky fundraising event which has raised over £170,000 for local charities is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.
Organisers of the Crantock Bale Push have announced its return on Friday 12th September, when teams of four will compete to push a 420-pound straw bale through the village. There’ll be junior and adult races, live music, and entertainment. This year’s event is raising money for Cornwall Hospice Care and other local causes. Chairperson Nigel Eustice said: “It will be great to see the Bale Push Man back as he always brings a smile to people’s faces, we always have supporters asking where he is and when will he be ready?” “We look forward to seeing teams of four and spectators ready to roll the big round straw bale from 5 pm with the junior teams; 8 and Under followed by the 12 and Under and the 16 and under, and then hotly contested the Ladies event, who all race each other over shorter distances,” he said. “And then from around 7.30 teams for the Open, and the 180’s compete over the full quarter of a mile course through the village up and down hills, pushing a full-size round bale of straw, weighing approximately 420lbs and measuring 4' 6" in diameter starting and finishing between the two village pubs. Teams enter on the evening [£10 for adult’s teams and £5 for children’s teams]. Parking is available at our Village Hall.” The event will feature live early evening entertainment from returning favourite 1940s crooner Andy Marshall, followed by more music later in the night from The Old Albion and The Cornishman. Crantock Bale Push has become a much-loved part of village life, bringing fun, excitement, and friendly competition for all ages. There’ll be plenty of food, music, and entertainment throughout the evening. Nigel added: “The total raised by the Bale Push since 2000 now tops over an incredible £171,500 which has been all been donated to Cornish charities and local organisations.”
