Wales and West Utilities have confirmed that two separate projects to upgrade gas pipes are getting underway within a mile of each other in Newquay town centre this week.
On Thursday, major works to upgrade gas pipes in the town centre commenced in the Gover Lane area. The company says the works are essential to ensure the gas is kept flowing safely to heat and power local homes and businesses. They’re due to continue until the end of March.
The company says that traffic management includes a road closure on Gover Lane, between the junctions of Bank Street and Beechfield Avenue.
The one-way restriction on Beach Road is being removed between the junctions of Central Square to Gover Lane.
Meanwhile, the company has now clarified that separate "phased road closures and traffic lights" will be in place for roadworks in nearby Crantock Street, St John's Road, and Mount Wise.
Wales & West Utilities Programme Controller, Abby Smith, said:
“We are working in the Crantock Street area of Newquay to upgrade the gas network. This work is essential to keep the gas flowing safely to heat and power local homes and businesses and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport greener gas in the future.
“In agreement with Cornwall Council and in order to keep the local community, road users and our colleagues safe while we work, phased road closures and traffic lights will be in place as we progress along Crantock Street, St Johns Road, and Mount Wise.
“Barring any unforeseen circumstances, we expect to complete our work in these areas by the end of March.
“We are sorry for any inconvenience our works may have caused. We know working on busy roads like this is not ideal, but the work really is essential to upgrade the network and to keep the gas flowing safely.
