Work to install surf heritage statue begins

Work has begun on installing a new statue celebrating Newquay’s surfing heritage.

The bronze sculpture is being erected on the Killacourt and has been donated to the town by the Keogh Foundation.

The foundation was set up by husband and wife Stuart and Cherry Keogh. Stuart passed away in 2023 at the age of 76.

Following lengthy discussions and public consultations, Newquay Town Council agreed for the sculpture to be placed on the Killacourt above Towan Beach.

The Keogh Foundation said it wanted the statue positioned there because Towan Bay is where Australian lifeguards first surfed fibreglass performance surfboards in 1962. The sculpture is intended to pay homage to those early surfers, as well as to everyone who has been involved in the sport of surfing in Newquay across the decades.

Newquay Town Council said in a statement:

"Work has now begun on installing the brand-new surf statue at Killacourt!

You may see some construction activity in the area over the next few days, but don’t worry, access to the area will remain open throughout.

We appreciate your patience while this exciting new addition to the space is completed. Stay tuned for more updates!"
